The Palos Verdes Directory is celebrating over 60 years as a community resource for Palos Verdes businesses and residents. The Directory is where Palos Verdes residents look to find local businesses and community information all in one place.
In 1955, the Palos Verdes Hills Nursery School was just two years old and looking for an effective fundraising vehicle. One of the parents had the idea to put out a local directory and sell ads to raise money for the school. Advertising revenue and donations generated by the Directory continue to benefit the Palos Verdes Hills Nursery School, a parent cooperative preschool for children ages 33 months to 5 years of age located in Rolling Hills Estates.
The first Directory produced in 1955 was well-received and soon became an indispensable resource to residents and businesses. The Directory grew over the years from a soft-cover pamphlet produced entirely by volunteers, to a professionally-printed and bound, one-inch thick book with a beautiful color photograph of a Palos Verdes scene on the front. It continues to provide to connect local businesses and residents, and remains the preschool’s most effective fundraiser.
What started out as an informal volunteer effort now includes a small paid staff and a formalized Directory Board made up of volunteer parents. Work toward production of the coming year’s Directory begins the summer before and culminates in a whirlwind “Stuffing Event” in March of each year. Hundreds of parent volunteers from PV Hills Nursery School and other community organizations gather to prepare over 27,000 Directories for delivery the next morning.
The 63rd edition of the Directory was hand-delivered to over 26,000 Palos Verdes households in March 2018 by volunteers from Community Helpline. We are proud to have connected Palos Verdes businesses and residents for over 60 years.
