The History Of The Palos Verdes Peninsula Directory
A group of enthusiastic and energetic parents founded Palos Verdes Nursery School in 1953. Like any fledgling organization, money was always a concern. Rummage sales, fashion luncheons, bridge luncheons, dinner dances were a constant preoccupation.
In 1955, a member came up with the idea of compiling a telephone directory for a fund-raising project. The first directory was mailed in June of that year….and so it began.
In the beginning, it was a yearly “ways and means” project with members going business to business selling ads, and checking on addresses and phone numbers. Through the years the Peninsula and the Directory have grown and the parents are still involved in the publication. Each year the members attend a “stuffing”, at which time 27,000 books are individually approved and “stuffed” into plastic bags for distribution. The next morning they are hand delivered by Community Helpline, an essential non-profit resource for the community. Over 500 local volunteers are involved in the “stuffing” and distribution of the Directory
Each year, the front cover is chosen from photo contest entries that best portray the Peninsula lifestyle.
Over the past 59 years, the Directory has been the local phone book and source of Peninsula information. What a tradition! We sincerely thank you for your support.
For the last 60 years the Palos Verdes Peninsula Directory has been a part of our community. This service has been one that provided residents with valuable information while giving individuals that small town feeling of community and tradition. The first local Palos Verdes Directory was just 84 pages, and it has now grown to over 400 pages.
